چکیده

There is a growing body of the literature that suggests that there are grain boundary structures that exist in ceramic systems that are not predicted by bulk thermodynamics. Transitions between the various grain boundary structures are not well understood either experimentally or theoretically. This study identifies six different types of grain boundary structures present in the alumina system. These grain boundary structures were directly correlated with significantly different grain boundary mobilities. There is a general trend towards increasing grain boundary disorder and increasing grain boundary mobility with increasing temperature. This is the first time such a broad range of behavior has been observed in a single system. The results have many implications on understanding grain boundary transport phenomena in ceramic systems. 2007 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Comparison of Creep Behavior in Alumina Based Ceramics Densified by Spark Plasma Sintering and Hot Pressing

Spark plasma sintering (SPS) method, as plasma activated sintering, is a method applicable for rapid sintering of metals and ceramics. Owing to the advantage of rapid heating, the alumina ceramics obtained by SPS have a grain size and density comparable to those of hot pressed ones. The increase of densification rate may be related to some difference in ion transport characteristics. This study...

Demystifying the role of sintering additives with “complexion”

he role of additives has long been a theme in sintering science. Recently, it has been discovered that ceramics may contain multiple different rain boundary phases (complexions) that are chemically induced by certain additives. These complexions are useful in explaining a number of nomalous phenomena associated with sintering, such as abnormal grain growth. The current work investigates how tra...

Mobility control of ceramic grain boundaries and interfaces

Grain boundary mobility and grain-liquid boundary mobility in ceramics vary vastly from material to material. Their characteristics are sensitive to the crystal structure, the nature of bonding, orientation, stoichiometry and composition. More directly, mobility can be lowered by decreasing the interfacial energy and anisotropy or increasing solute drag, liquid viscosity, particle pinning and g...

Long Term Fatigue Behavior of Zirconia Based Dental Ceramics

This study evaluated the influence of cyclic loading on zirconia bar-shaped specimens after being subjected to three different surface treatments: particle abrasion with either 50 μm or 110 μm alumina and grinding with diamond points, while polished specimens served as a control. Statistical analysis revealed significant reduction (38-67%) in flexure strength (P < 0.001) after three million cyc...

Continuum modelling and representations of interfaces and their transitions in materials

Evidence for internal and external interface transitions in ceramics and metals is copious. The work described here lays out a framework for predicting interface transitions and including them on bulk phase diagrams. Advances in understanding possible grain boundary transitions in singleand binary-component materials have been made with energetics modelled with the phase-field model due to Koba...
